Mouse and Keyboard

While reading an eBook you can move forward and back in the text using just your mouse. With the Left Mouse Button you single click to page down and double click to page up. With the Right Mouse Button you single click to start or stop speaking the text on the screen, and double click to pop up the menu. If you are using OS X you can easily upgrade its single button mouse with a USB two button mouse.

The keyboard actions while reading an eBook are:

  • pop up the menu: Spacebar, Enter/Return, or Esc/Escape;
  • page down: Forward Arrow, or Down Arrow;
  • page up: Back Arrow, or Up Arrow;
  • move forward one paragraph¹: Page Down;
  • move back one paragraph¹: Page Up;
  • move to the top of the eBook²: Home;
  • move to the end of the eBook²: End;
  • speak the text on the screen: Ctrl/Control;
  • continuous speech to the eBook's end: Shift.

¹ For easy keyboard control the arrow keys page through the text. Occassionally you may want to move forward or back by paragraph. If only a few words are displayed on the screen at a time then jumping to the next paragraph provides a faster movement forward (or back) through the text. Because moving by paragraph is less common than paging through the text these paragraph actions are provided by the slightly more difficult to control Page Up and Page Down keys.

² Project Gutenberg eBooks bracket the text with legal statements and notes. CueLine® ED attempts to set Home to the start of the text and End to the end of the text. Repeatedly pressing the Home Key toggles the definition of Home between the start of the text and the start of the file. Similarly, repeatedly pressing the End Key toggles the definition of End between the end of the text and the end of the file.
